Izziyana (“Izzi”) Suhaimi is a Signaporean artist who layers embroidery against a backdrop of illustration and watercolour to create refreshing, vibrant and textural portraits. She pays homage to the meticulous tradition of needlework but puts a uniquely contemporary spin on it. It’s this connection between tradition and modernity that Izzi is keen to explore through her art: craftsmanship vs mass production; the meeting of historical arts and modern youth culture.
Preferring to work with craft-based techniques, I am attracted to the evidence of the hand and its time-consuming aspect, which runs counter to the instant gratification and mass-production centred age of today.
Izzi’s work is a study in texture, while at the same time fun and richly colourful. A beautiful addition to this frosty, mid-winter day.
